Leslie and Dave's Visit
Leslie and Dave came to visit on Saturday, August 22nd. We explored Carrboro together, first catching a late lunch at the Southern Rail. Leslie and I split a vegetarian burger and BLT... I wasn't too impressed with the mushy bean burger... but then again I am not used to vegetarian food. We went there for the uniqueness of the ornately decorated train car. Dave commented on the marble slab tables with scrolled iron legs, as being the real thing... with their unpolished underside. After lunch we went shopping in the Weaver Street Market, and checked out the PTA thrift shop. We saw some really interesting things, like black light reactive clay monster shadow aquariums, and some very interesting comic, and gold paint art, Extremely dark red glass chandeliers, that look black. There definitely were some points of interest: Dave was delighted to find a brown bandana, and considered adding some hats to his enormous collection. Leslie loved the rubber toed shoes, that really looked more like a glove for your foot... with thin rubber soles. We ended up having Italian Ice at my favorite icecream shop Ritas. While Chris and Dave bonded over some hilarious stories, Leslie and I had some quality "girl time" on some swings, catching up... and it felt great... we realized that we had been doing this since we were so very young... since kindergarten. There is a word in Polish: Przyjaciel which means very best friend. Everyone else is a Kolega which means more like a colleague or aquanitance or friend, but real trust in a communist society is hard to come by... since the government rewarded those who spied on their neighbors and loved ones. The term Przyjaciel is a word which the Polish do not use lightly, because it holds such great significance in terms of trust and the bond of friendship. The Polish believe that it signifies life long friendship, a bond that is very strong... and that people usually only have two Przyjaciel's in their lifetime. One being their spouse, and then usually another of the same sex... their very best friend. I have been blessed with more than two in my life, but Leslie has shared the journey for as far back as I can remember... we were in Brownie Scouts together. We still love exploring the world together. Saturday was far too short, as with our work schedules such visits are a rare and special treat, a real treasure.

Andy & Sharon's Visit
Tobacco District near Durham Bulls Ball Park, NC
Chris's Best Friends Andy and Sharon, came down from Maryland for a visit the weekend of July 24th-26th. I negotiated a couple of suites at La Quinta for the visit, which is the ideal location for site seeing in Durham and Chapel Hill. I found some beautiful fresh light blue Irises and placed them in Andy and Sharon's suite. The irises reminded me of the periwinkle color that Sharon picked for their wedding. I still had work that weekend, so Chris was mostly the tour guide. They hit the Duke Campus, touring the Sarah P. Duke Gardens reminiscing over their college days. They brought us some wonderful pastries and homemade chocolate cupcakes made from soy flour, which I had never had before, delicious. They even brought some blueberry wine, from Sharon's home town, which blueberry is Chris's favorite flavor. Sharon gifted a beautiful emerald green make-up bag, which I am putting to use while organizing my storage. We enjoyed the cuisine scene in Carrboro, eating out at Crooks Corner and Elmo's Diner. They met up with a fellow Alumnus, Daniel whose wife Laura recently had a little girl named Lena, with an unbelievable head full of gorgeous black hair. So three of the four Musketeers visited the Duke Campus and sucked on loco pops, while d'Artagnan aka Shumin is off rock climbing or preparing for his nuptials. Other highlights included visits to Eno River State Park, and the Durham Life and Science Museum featuring the New Dino Trail. Watching Chris and Andy joking around is a barrel of laughs, and Sharon is a paragon of grace and class. We had a great time, and can't wait for the next visit... hopefully we will hit the Smithonian Museums in D.C. soon.
